Taking career advice to the Max

Maxoil brings industry into the classroom.

Global oil and gas consultancy, Maxoil Solutions, brought industry into the classroom recently with an insightful careers talk at RGU’s School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences.

Representatives from Maxoil’s Aberdeen headquarters visited the university to speak to students who are currently in the midst of Analytical Chemistry and Oilfield Chemistries courses.

The presentation gave attendees a flavour of what life is like within the oil and gas sector, through explaining the type of career paths on offer and providing hints and tips for breaking into the industry through the production chemistry/process engineering fields.

The Maxoil team included two former students, Nina Darbyshire and Euan McCall, who were able to share their personal experiences of how they progressed from university into working life, and how they transferred theory learned in class into their day-to-day work duties.

Also speaking at the event was Ruth Burns, Maxoil’s Corporate Services Manager, who was able to provide students with invaluable HR information. Ruth talked attendees through a range of important topics, including training and development opportunities, salary levels and requirements for working offshore.

Ruth commented: “It was a pleasure to visit RGU and speak to talented students who in the future will be shaping and driving the oil and gas industry. At Maxoil, we are committed to developing the next generation of engineers and chemists, regularly welcoming students into our offices, where they can enjoy a practical taste of what a role within the sector entails.

“This time though we thought it would be great if we could bring industry into the classroom and allow more students to benefit from our experience. Hopefully we provided attendees with useful information and helped prepare them for flourishing careers within the sector.”

Dr Graeme Kay, senior lecturer at RGU, added: “Within the School of Pharmacy & Life Sciences at RGU we aim to provide a suite of postgraduate courses which are current, industrially relevant and give our graduates the best possible chance of employment.

“This is true for our course, MSc in Instrumental Analytical Sciences (IAS): Oilfield Chemicals, where we have developed strong links with the energy industry. Our current students welcomed the recent presentation by Maxoil which gave them a great insight to the career paths that may be available to them when they graduate.”
